Comparing two things

We use comparative adjectives to compare two things, places or people. The comparative goes before than.

Comparative adjectives
The shopping centre is cleaner than the market.
Buses are slower than bikes.
Buses are more dangerous than bikes.
Example: A + is / are + comparative + than + B

The shopping centre is cleaner than the market.

comparative adjectives = adjektif perbandingan

Susunan ayatnya ialah benda pertama, is atau are, kata adjektif perbandingan, than, dan benda kedua.

Contoh: The shopping centre is cleaner than the market.

Rules

Short adjectives

RuleExample
regular: + erquiet → quieter, old → older
ends with -e: + rnice → nicer, safe → safer
consonant + y → ierfriendly → friendlier
consonant + vowel + consonantbig → bigger, hot → hotter
big → bigger: double the last letter. But slow → slower (it ends in w, so no double).

My house is bigger than your house.

short adjectives = adjektif pendek

Contoh: My house is bigger than your house.

Quick check

What is the comparative of hot?

Kota Kinabalu is hotter than Kundasang.

hot → hotter = gandakan huruf akhir

Contoh: Kota Kinabalu is bigger than Kudat. — Kota Kinabalu lebih besar daripada Kudat.

Awas: Hanya perkataan pendek dengan satu vokal menggandakan huruf akhirnya.

Rules

Long and irregular adjectives

TypeExample
long: more + adjectivedangerous → more dangerous
long: more + adjectivemodern → more modern
irregulargood → better
irregularbad → worse
irregularfar → further
Irregular comparatives do not follow the rules. Learn them by heart!

长的形容词,例如 dangerous、modern、expensive、interesting,不在后面加 er,而是在前面加 more,变成 more dangerous、more modern。

The new road is better than the old road.

注意: 不可以说 more good 或 gooder.

long and irregular = panjang dan tidak tetap

Contoh: The new road is better than the old road.

Awas: Jangan sebut more good atau gooder.

Quick check

Shops are … than markets.

more + long adjective = 长形容词加 more

Shops are more expensive than markets.

more + long adjective = more dan adjektif panjang

Contoh: Markets are cheaper than shops. — Pasar lebih murah daripada kedai.

Awas: Pilih more atau er sahaja; jangan gunakan kedua-duanya.

Write it

Sentences with than

Put the words in order and use the correct comparative.

Kota Kinabalu / is / than / Kudat. (big) → Kota Kinabalu is bigger than Kudat.
My mum’s laksa / is / than / the cafe’s laksa. (good) → My mum’s laksa is better than the cafe’s laksa.
Why / is / this class / than / the other class? (noisy) → Why is this class noisier than the other class?
How do we say than? BM: daripada

than = 比

Why is this class noisier than the other class。noisy 是辅音加 y 结尾,所以 y 要改成 i 再加 er;good 是不规则的,变成 better.

Kota Kinabalu is bigger than Kudat.

注意: than 和 then 拼法很像,比较时要用 than.

than = daripada

Dalam ayat tanya, letakkan is atau are di hadapan, contohnya Why is this class noisier than the other class. Good pula tidak teratur.

Contoh: My bag is heavier than your bag. — Beg saya lebih berat daripada beg anda.

Awas: Than dan then hampir sama ejaannya; untuk perbandingan gunakan than.

Quick check

Choose the correct sentence.

prettyer 没有把 y 改成 i,所以错;more pretty 也不对,因为 pretty 是短形容词,要加 er。

This house is prettier than my house.

y → ier = y menjadi ier

Contoh: This street is dirtier than my street. — Jalan ini lebih kotor daripada jalan saya.

Awas: Y ditukar kepada i hanya jika huruf sebelumnya konsonan.

Ask and answer

Two restaurants

Pak Ali’sUncle Lee’s
opened in19922014
quiet?✓✓✓✓
friendly?✓✓✓✓✓
expensive?✓✓✓
big?✓✓✓
Example: A: Is Pak Ali’s older than Uncle Lee’s? B: Yes, it is.
A: Is Pak Ali’s friendlier than Uncle Lee’s? B: No, it isn’t. Uncle Lee’s is friendlier.

回答 Yes, it is 或 No, it isn’t,再可以补一句哪一家比较怎样。

Is Uncle Lee’s friendlier than Pak Ali’s? Yes, it is.

comparative questions = soalan perbandingan

Susunan soalan ialah Is, restoran pertama, kata adjektif perbandingan, than, dan restoran kedua. Jawab Yes, it is atau No, it isn’t.

Contoh: Is Uncle Lee’s friendlier than Pak Ali’s? Yes, it is.

Quick check

Is Uncle Lee’s quieter than Pak Ali’s?

No, it isn’t。Yes, there is 是回答 Is there 的问句,这里问的是 Is Uncle Lee’s,主语是餐馆,所以简短回答用 it.

Pak Ali’s is quieter than Uncle Lee’s.

注意: 问 Is it 就答 it is,问 Is there 才答 there is.

reading the table = membaca jadual

Soalan ini bermula dengan Is Uncle Lee’s, iaitu subjeknya sebuah restoran, jadi jawapan pendek menggunakan it, bukan there. Bandingkan tanda kedua-dua restoran sebelum menjawab.

Contoh: Is Pak Ali’s bigger than Uncle Lee’s?

Awas: Soalan Is it dijawab dengan it is; hanya soalan Is there dijawab dengan there is.

Pronunciation

The /ə/ sound in comparatives

In comparatives, -er and than are weak. They have the sound /ə/ (like the “uh” in *about*).

cleaner /ˈkliːnə/
safer /ˈseɪfə/
It’s nicer than New York. /ˈnaɪsə ðən/
I think Uncle Lee’s is cheaper than Pak Ali’s.
Say it fast and soft: nicer than = /ˈnaɪsə ðən/

cleaner 读作 clean-uh,safer 读作 safe-uh,than 读作 thun,不读成 than 的 a 那么重。 It’s nicer than New York。

It’s cheaper than Pak Ali’s. cheaper 的 er 和 than 都轻读。

/ə/ sound = bunyi lemah

Apabila menyebut bentuk perbandingan, er dan than disebut dengan ringan dan pendek, iaitu bunyi /ə/, seperti bunyi pertama dalam about. Cleaner disebut clean-uh, safer disebut safe-uh, dan than disebut thun. It’s nicer than New York. Berlatih beberapa kali supaya sebutan anda jelas.

Contoh: It’s cheaper than Pak Ali’s.

Quick check

In “safer than”, which parts have the weak /ə/ sound?

safer than 里面,safer 结尾的 er 和 than 中间的 a 都读成弱音 /ə/,所以整个短语听起来像 safe-uh thun。

Our school is safer than the market. safer 的 er 轻读。

weak sounds = bunyi lemah

Contoh: Our school is cleaner than the market.

Key phrases

Comparing opinions

I think …
Yes, you’re right.
Really? I think …
Example: Ali: I think Sandakan is prettier than Tawau.
Mei: Really? I think Tawau is prettier.
Ali: I think Gaya Street is busier than our street.
Mei: Yes, you’re right.
Compare: two cities · two sports teams · two shops · two cafes · two TV programmes · two video games · two streets · two people

同意对方就说 Yes, you’re right 你说得对;不同意就说 Really? I think 真的吗?

Really? I think Tawau is prettier.

comparing opinions = membandingkan pendapat

Apabila membandingkan dua benda dengan rakan, gunakan I think untuk memberi pendapat. Jika setuju, sebut Yes, you’re right, iaitu betul kata awak. Jika tidak setuju, sebut Really? I think, kemudian beri perbandingan anda. Anda boleh membandingkan dua bandar, dua pasukan, dua kedai, dua rancangan TV, dua permainan video atau dua orang.

Contoh: Really? I think Tawau is prettier. — Betulkah?

Puzzle sentences

Make puzzle sentences about objects or places with comparative adjectives. Your partner guesses.

It’s faster than a car, but slower than a plane. → (a train)
It’s bigger than a cat, but smaller than an elephant. → (a dog / a cow …)
It’s quieter than a market, and there are a lot of books. → (a library)

It’s faster than a bike, but slower than a car.

puzzle sentences = ayat teka-teki

Contoh: It’s faster than a bike, but slower than a car.

Quick check

It’s bigger than a car, but smaller than a ship. It takes a lot of people to school. What is it?

solve the puzzle = 解谜

A bus is bigger than a car.

solve the puzzle = selesaikan teka-teki

Contoh: A plane is bigger than a car. — Kapal terbang lebih besar daripada kereta.

Awas: Semua petunjuk perbandingan mesti sesuai barulah jawapan itu betul.

My school is bigger than your school.

lesson summary = ringkasan pelajaran

Kata adjektif panjang menggunakan more. Good, bad dan far tidak teratur. Selepas bentuk perbandingan, letakkan than.

Contoh: My school is bigger than your school.
