places = 城镇里的地方

There’s a cinema in my street.

places = tempat di bandar

Contoh: There’s a cinema in my street. — Ada sebuah pawagam di jalan rumah saya.

Awas: Ejaan British theatre berakhir dengan re.

Quick check

Where can you watch a new film?

cinema = 电影院

Let’s go to the cinema on Saturday.

注意: at the cinema 用 at.

cinema = pawagam

Contoh: Let’s go to the library on Saturday. — Jom pergi ke perpustakaan pada hari Sabtu.

Awas: Kita sebut at the cinema dengan at.

Vocabulary

Opposite adjectives

These adjectives describe places. Each pair has opposite meanings.

🙂🙁
clean · bersihdirty · kotor
quiet · sunyinoisy · bising
pretty · cantikugly · hodoh
safe · selamatdangerous · berbahaya
friendly · mesraunfriendly · tidak mesra
And modern / new 🆚 old: The new library is modern. The bridge is very old.

opposites = 相反词

The river is dirty. → The river is clean.

opposites = lawan kata

Contoh: The river is dirty. → The river is clean. — Sungai itu kotor. → Sungai itu bersih.

Awas: Bukan semua perkataan boleh ditambah un.

Quick check

I live in a noisy part of the city.
What is the opposite sentence?

The market is noisy. The library is quiet.

noisy ↔ quiet = bising ↔ senyap

Cari perkataan tebal dahulu, kemudian fikirkan lawan katanya.

Contoh: The market is noisy, but the park is pretty. — Pasar itu bising, tetapi taman itu cantik.

Awas: Tukar kata adjektif sahaja; perkataan lain kekal.

Language focus

there’s, there isn’t, there are, there aren’t

singular (one)plural (many)
✓There’s a big square.There are some shops.
✗There isn’t a cinema.There aren’t any parks.
?Is there a hotel? Are there any cafes?
How manyHow many cafes are there? – There are two.
Example: I live in Tawau. There’s a big market, but there isn’t a zoo. There are some nice cafes, but there aren’t any cinemas near my house.

there is / there are = 有

说某个地方“有”什么,单数用 there’s 或 there is,复数用 there are;否定是 there isn’t 和 there aren’t。 问句把 is 或 are 放到 there 前面。问数量用 How many 加复数名词再加 are there,回答 There are 加数字。

There isn’t a zoo, but there are some nice cafes.

there is / there are = ada

Untuk menyatakan sesuatu ada di sesuatu tempat, gunakan there’s atau there is untuk tunggal, dan there are untuk jamak. Bentuk negatifnya there isn’t dan there aren’t. Kata nama jamak dalam ayat positif didahului some, manakala dalam ayat negatif dan ayat tanya didahului any. Untuk bilangan, gunakan How many, kata nama jamak dan are there.

Contoh: There isn’t a zoo, but there are some nice cafes.

Awas: How many diikuti kata nama jamak.

Quick check

Near my house, … any parks, but I’ve got a big garden.

there aren’t = 没有(复数)

parks 是复数,前面有 any,又有 but 表示转折,所以要用复数的否定 there aren’t。there isn’t 用在单数;there are 是肯定,跟 any 和后面的意思不配合。

There aren’t any parks near my house.

Contoh: There isn’t a cinema near my house. — Tiada pawagam berhampiran rumah saya.

Awas: Any selalunya digunakan dalam ayat negatif.

Comparative adjectives

ruleexamples
+ ersmall → smaller, cheap → cheaper
+ rnice → nicer, safe → safer
double + erbig → bigger, hot → hotter
y → ierpretty → prettier, noisy → noisier
more + long adjectivemore dangerous, more expensive
Irregular: good → better, bad → worse, far → further. Use than after the comparative: The sea is more dangerous than the river.

comparatives = 比较级

Kota Kinabalu is bigger than Kudat.

注意: 不可以说 more big 或 more better.

comparatives = kata sifat perbandingan

Kata adjektif panjang menggunakan more. Good, bad dan far tidak teratur.

Contoh: Kota Kinabalu is bigger than Kudat. — Kota Kinabalu lebih besar daripada Kudat.

Awas: Jangan sebut more big atau more better.

Quick check

The new shopping centre is … the old market.

good 是不规则形容词,比较级不是 gooder,也不是 more good,而是 better。后面要加 than 才可以说出比较的对象:the new shopping centre is better than the old market。

This cafe is better than that one.

good → better = baik → lebih baik

Contoh: This road is worse than that one. — Jalan ini lebih teruk daripada jalan itu.

Awas: Bentuk perbandingan diikuti than.

Speaking

Asking and saying where places are

Example: Laila: Excuse me. Are we near the train station here?
Woman: Yes, we are. Have you got a map?
Laila: Yes, here it is.
Woman: Right, look. We’re here and the train station is in Jalan Tun Fuad.
Laila: How far is it from here?
Woman: It’s about five minutes on foot.
Laila: Great. One more thing: is there a cafe around here?
Woman: Yes, there’s a cafe in Jalan Gaya.
Laila: That’s great. Thanks for your help.
Woman: You’re welcome.

asking the way = 问路

How far is it from here,回答多少分钟,on foot 是走路。最后说 Thanks for your help,对方回答 You’re welcome.

It’s about five minutes on foot.

注意: on foot 不说 by foot.

asking the way = bertanya arah

Dialog bertanya arah mesti sopan. Mulakan dengan Excuse me, kemudian tanya sama ada kita berhampiran sesuatu tempat. Orang itu boleh bertanya sama ada anda ada peta, lalu menunjuk dan berkata We’re here. Untuk jarak, tanya How far is it from here, dan jawab berapa minit; on foot bermaksud berjalan kaki. Akhiri dengan terima kasih dan sama-sama.

Contoh: It’s about five minutes on foot. — Kira-kira lima minit berjalan kaki.

Awas: Sebut on foot, bukan by foot.

Quick check

Laila: Thanks for your help.
Woman: …

You’re welcome =

一段问路的对话从 Excuse me 开始,到 You’re welcome 结束。

Thank you! – You’re welcome.

You’re = You are.

You’re welcome = sama-sama

Contoh: Excuse me. Where’s the museum? — Maafkan saya. Di manakah muzium?

Awas: You’re ialah singkatan You are.

Writing

Position of adjectives

The adjective goes before the noun: a busy city, some nice places.
really / very / quite go before the adjective: a really friendly town, a very pretty beach.
After is / are, the adjective comes after the verb: The people are friendly.
Example: Kudat is a town. (quiet) → Kudat is a quiet town.
There’s a beach. (very pretty) → There’s a very pretty beach.

写城镇描写时,形容词放在名词前面,例如 a busy city 繁忙的城市;really、very、quite 这些表示程度的词放在形容词前面,例如 a very pretty beach 很漂亮的海滩。

There’s a really nice park.

adjective position = kedudukan kata sifat

Apabila menerangkan bandar, kata adjektif diletakkan sebelum kata nama, contohnya a busy city. Perkataan penguat seperti really, very dan quite diletakkan sebelum kata adjektif, contohnya a very pretty beach. Jika ayat menggunakan is atau are, kata adjektif datang selepas kata kerja.

Contoh: There’s a really nice park. — Ada sebuah taman yang sangat bagus.

Awas: Bahasa Melayu sebut taman cantik; bahasa Inggeris sebut nice park.

Quick check

Which sentence is correct?

It’s a very quiet village.

really + adjective + noun = sangat + kata sifat + kata nama

Contoh: It’s a very quiet village. — Ia sebuah kampung yang sangat senyap.

Awas: Really tidak diletakkan selepas kata nama.

Read

Welcome to Kudat!

Read Hafiz’s description of his town.

Example: Kudat is a small town in the north of Sabah. There are a lot of old shophouses in the town centre and the fish market is really busy in the morning.
The beaches near Kudat are very clean and quiet. The Tip of Borneo is only twenty minutes by car from the town.
It’s about three hours by bus from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat. Kota Kinabalu is bigger and more exciting, but I think Kudat is friendlier!

reading for detail = 读出细节

The Tip of Borneo is only twenty minutes by car.

reading for detail = membaca untuk butiran

Perhatikan ayat perbandingannya.

Contoh: The Tip of Borneo is only twenty minutes by car. — Hujung Borneo hanya dua puluh minit dengan kereta.

Awas: Perhatikan perkataan only dan about.

Quick check

True or false? “Hafiz thinks Kudat is more exciting than Kota Kinabalu.”

true or false = 对还是错

Kota Kinabalu is more exciting, but Kudat is friendlier.

true or false = betul atau salah

Contoh: Kudat is smaller than Kota Kinabalu. — Kudat lebih kecil daripada Kota Kinabalu.

Awas: Dalam ayat perbandingan, perhatikan subjeknya dengan teliti.

Is there、Are there、How many

There’s a very pretty beach and it’s cleaner than the river.

unit review = ulang kaji unit

Pelajaran ini mengulang kaji semua isi Unit 1: tempat di bandar, kata adjektif berlawanan, there’s dan there are, soalan Is there, Are there dan How many, bentuk perbandingan untuk membandingkan dua tempat, cara bertanya arah dengan sopan, serta kedudukan kata adjektif dalam penulisan. Selepas latihan, ulang kaji bahagian yang masih lemah.

Contoh: There’s a very pretty beach and it’s cleaner than the river.
