Language focus

Object pronouns: why do we need them?

In the second sentences, we don’t repeat the name or noun.

Object pronouns; Past simple: affirmative and negative
Without object pronounWith object pronoun
Dad made a big picture from the photos.Dad made a big picture from them.
He gave the picture to Suman. He gave it to her.
I often help my brother.I often help him.
Rule: Object pronouns are used in place of names or nouns.

I like Aina. I sit next to her.

object pronoun = kata ganti nama objek

Contohnya, he gave the picture to Suman menjadi he gave it to her.

Contoh: I like Aina. I sit next to her. — Saya suka Aina. Saya duduk di sebelahnya.

Awas: Kata ganti nama objek menggantikan nama atau kata nama, bukan kata kerja atau kata adjektif.

Language focus

Subject pronouns → object pronouns

I → mesayaCan you help me?
you → youawakI’ll call you later.
he → himdiaI like him.
she → herdiaListen to her!
it → itiaI love it.
we → uskamiCome with us.
they → themmerekaLook at them.

我变成 me,他变成 him,她变成 her,我们变成 us,他们变成 them。

She likes me. I like her too.

注意: 不要说 Come with we,要说 Come with us.

subject and object = subjek dan objek

Kata ganti nama subjek diletakkan sebelum kata kerja dan melakukan perbuatan. Kata ganti nama objek diletakkan selepas kata kerja atau kata sendi dan menerima perbuatan. I menjadi me, he menjadi him, she menjadi her, we menjadi us, dan they menjadi them. You dan it tidak berubah. Them boleh merujuk kepada orang atau benda.

Contoh: She likes me. I like her too. — Dia suka saya. Saya pun suka dia.

Awas: Sebut come with us, jangan sebut come with we.

Quick check

Complete the rule: Object pronouns are used in place of ___ or ___.

rule = 规则

Munish made a picture from the photos → from them.

rule = peraturan

Fikirkan contoh tadi. Suman ialah nama orang dan menjadi her. The photos ialah kata nama dan menjadi them, manakala the picture juga kata nama yang menjadi it.

Contoh: Munish made a picture from the photos → from them.

Where do object pronouns go?

Put object pronouns after a verb or after a preposition (with, to, for, at, next to …).

After a verbAfter a preposition
Science isn’t easy, but I study it.Siti is my favourite singer. I listen to her.
My best friend is Kumar. I like him.My cousins are here. I play with them.
Grandma is ill. Mum visits her.We are hungry. Cook for us, please!

after verbs and prepositions = 放在动词和介词后面

宾格代词的位置很固定:放在动词后面,例如 like him、study it;或者放在介词后面,例如 listen to her、play with them、cook for us。

I love durians. I eat them every week.

注意: 介词后面不能用主格,不说 with they,要说 with them。

after verbs and prepositions = selepas kata kerja dan kata sendi

Perkataan ini hadir selepas kata kerja, seperti like him atau study it, atau selepas kata sendi, seperti listen to her, play with them atau cook for us. Gunakan it untuk satu benda, dan them untuk dua atau lebih benda atau orang. Fikirkan sama ada tunggal atau jamak.

Contoh: I love durians. I eat them every week. — Saya suka durian. Saya makan durian setiap minggu.

Awas: Jangan gunakan kata ganti nama subjek selepas kata sendi. Sebut with them, bukan with they.

Quick check

My grandparents live in Kudat. I visit ___ every school holiday.

them = 他们(宾格)

My grandparents are kind. I love them.

注意: they、them、their 拼法很像,意思不一样。

them = mereka (objek)

Tempat kosong berada selepas kata kerja visit, jadi kita memerlukan kata ganti nama objek. Their pula bermaksud milik mereka dan mesti diikuti kata nama, seperti their house. Di sini tiada kata nama selepasnya.

Contoh: My grandparents are kind. I love them. — Datuk dan nenek saya baik hati. Saya sayang mereka.

Awas: They, them dan their nampak hampir sama, tetapi tugasnya berbeza.

Language focus

Past simple: affirmative

For finished actions in the past. Regular verbs:

RuleExamples
most verbs + -edlook → looked
ending in -e + -dlive → lived
one vowel + one consonant → doublestop → stopped
consonant + y → -iedstudy → studied

I studied, she studied, they studied.

past simple affirmative = ayat positif kala lampau

Contoh: I studied, she studied, they studied. — Saya belajar, dia belajar, mereka belajar.

Language focus

Past simple: irregular verbs

Irregular verbs don’t end in -ed. Learn them by heart!

go → wentpergiWe went to Kundasang.
see → sawnampakI saw a hornbill.
eat → atemakanShe ate nasi lemak.
have → hadadaHe had a cold.
make → madebuatThey made a cake.
give → gaveberiMum gave me a hug.
Same form for all persons: I went, she went, they went.

不规则动词的过去式不加 ed,而是变成另一个样子,例如 go 变 went,see 变 saw,eat 变 ate,have 变 had,make 变 made,give 变 gave。

I went to Kundasang and she went to Semporna.

Bentuknya berubah: go menjadi went, see menjadi saw, eat menjadi ate, have menjadi had, make menjadi made, dan give menjadi gave.

Contoh: I went to Kundasang and she went to Semporna.

Quick check

Which past simple form is spelt correctly?

The bus stopped and we planned our trip.

spelling rules = peraturan ejaan

Contoh: The bus stopped at the station. — Bas itu berhenti di stesen.

Awas: Hanya kata kerja pendek seperti stop dan plan menggandakan huruf akhir.

Language focus

Past simple: negative

To make the past simple negative, use didn’t (did not) + the base form of the verb.

AffirmativeNegative
She had glasses. She didn’t have glasses.
I looked at the photos.I didn’t look at the photos.
They went to school. They didn’t go to school.
He saw the film.He didn’t see the film.
After didn’t, the verb goes back to the base form: didn’t have ✔ — didn’t had ✘

She didn’t have glasses,不是 didn’t had。

We didn’t go to the beach last Sunday.

didn’t + base form = tidak (masa lampau)

Untuk membina ayat negatif dalam kala lampau, gunakan didn’t, iaitu did not, diikuti kata dasar. Contohnya, she had glasses menjadi she didn’t have glasses, bukan didn’t had.

Contoh: We didn’t go to the beach last Sunday.

Awas: Bagi kata kerja be, gunakan wasn’t atau weren’t, bukan didn’t.

Quick check

Choose the correct negative: “Amir saw the new film.”

didn’t see = 没有看

Amir didn’t see the new film

I didn’t see Ali at the party.

didn’t see = tidak menonton

Contoh: I didn’t see Ali at the party. — Saya tidak nampak Ali di majlis itu.

Awas: Tunjukkan masa lalu sekali sahaja dalam ayat. Didn’t sudah melakukannya.

Read

A life on TV

Read about a young actor. Find the affirmative and negative verbs.

Affirmative: acted, gave, loved, had
Negative: didn’t make, didn’t go, didn’t have
Example: Between the ages of nine and fifteen, Aina Rahim acted in a famous TV series. At that time she didn’t make any films and she didn’t go to a normal school. A teacher gave lessons to all the children on the set. Some young actors didn’t have an easy time, but Aina loved her job and she had a lot of fun.

肯定的过去式有 acted(演出)、gave(给)、loved(热爱)、had(有);否定的有 didn’t make、didn’t go、didn’t have,后面都是动词原形。

She didn’t go to a normal school, but she had a teacher.

reading for grammar = mencari tatabahasa

Bentuk negatif pula ialah didn’t make, didn’t go dan didn’t have, dan setiap satu diikuti kata dasar. Mencari tatabahasa dalam teks sebenar membantu kita mengingatinya.

Contoh: She didn’t go to a normal school, but she had a teacher.

Quick check

Some young actors ___ an easy time, but Aina loved her job.

didn’t have = 没有

We didn’t have any homework yesterday.

注意: have got 的过去式否定也说 didn’t have。

didn’t have = tidak mempunyai

Contoh: We didn’t have any homework yesterday. — Kami tiada kerja rumah semalam.

Awas: Bentuk negatif lampau bagi have got juga ialah didn’t have.

Use it!

Talk about your experiences

Say true sentences about you with the affirmative or negative. Your partner answers.

I (go) to another country last year. → I went … / I didn’t go …
I (watch) sport on TV last night.
I (eat) soup yesterday.
I (play) video games last weekend.
Example: A: I lived in another town when I was younger.
B: Me, too! I lived in Tawau.
C: Really? I didn’t. I lived here.
Finished? Write about what you did last weekend.

me too / really = 我也是/真的吗

I didn’t.

A: I didn’t eat soup yesterday. B: Really? I ate chicken soup.

Me neither.

me too / really = saya juga / betulkah

Jika rakan anda melakukan perkara yang sama, dia berkata Me, too! Jika tidak, dia berkata Really? I didn’t. Kemudian dia menambah maklumat tentang dirinya. Begitulah perbualan yang semula jadi.

Contoh: A: I didn’t eat soup yesterday. B: Really? I ate chicken soup. — Betulkah? Saya makan sup ayam.

Awas: Jika seseorang menyebut ayat negatif dan anda pun sama, sebut Me neither.

Quick check

A: I went to the cinema last month. B: Really? I ___. I stayed at home.

don’t 是现在式,时间不对;wasn’t 是 be 动词的过去式否定,只能回应有 was 的句子,例如 I was tired。

A: I played football yesterday. B: Really? I didn’t.

I wasn’t.

short reply = jawapan pendek

Penutur A bercakap tentang masa lalu dengan kata kerja biasa, iaitu went. Wasn’t hanya menjawab ayat yang menggunakan was, seperti I was tired. Kemudian B menerangkan apa yang dia buat.

Contoh: A: I played football yesterday. B: Really? I didn’t. — Betulkah? Saya tidak bermain.

Awas: Jawab I wasn’t hanya apabila seseorang berkata I was….

第一是宾格代词:用 me、you、him、her、it、us、them 代替名字或名词,放在动词或介词后面。

I saw her, but I didn’t talk to her.

lesson summary = rumusan pelajaran

Pelajaran ini merangkumi dua perkara tatabahasa. Pertama, kata ganti nama objek seperti me, him, her, us dan them menggantikan nama atau kata nama selepas kata kerja dan kata sendi.

Contoh: I saw her, but I didn’t talk to her. — Saya nampak dia, tetapi saya tidak bercakap dengannya.

Awas: Apabila menukar ayat kepada negatif, tukar bentuk lampau kembali kepada kata dasar.
